We had a pretty smooth kidding season this year and have eight more does to kid in July. We had a pretty good turnout for our Breeder's Choice Sale in April and hope the kids got some nice show animals at reasonable prices. With the economy the way it is they need to be aware of what they are spending on their projects. I have a hard time understanding the logic of spending more than they can possibly make....after all it is suppose to be a market project. Enough said. Our granddaughter did very well this past season with her string of kids. She won Reserve Grand Champion Market Goat and Reserve Grand Champion Overall Market Goat at the Clarke County Fair. She placed very well with all her goats at two other jackpot shows and placed 3rd place in the medium weight class at the ABGA Show in Harrisonburg, VA this past spring. It is that time of year again and Emily and Amanda (another grandaughter) plan on showing at the Old Dominion Boer Goat Show in Harrisonburg, VA on May 16th. They are really looking forward to it. I'll fill you in later on the results.
Emily showed market hogs for the first time last year and hopes to improve for this upcoming show year. A big thanks to Scott and Connie Smith at Sweet Breezy Ridge Farm for selling Emily her market pigs. She entered the livestock bowl contest and has won a lamb for this year.
My husband recently had surgery on his right hand for carpal tunnel and I became aware of how much I depended on him. I tried trimming one goat hoof and almost took a finger off!!! I was lucky enough to find a wonderful 4-H kid to trim hooves for me. He does an excellent job and is very reasonable on his pricing. I don't know if my husband will ever want to trim hooves again. Give Justin Kobayashi a call at (304)725-8295 to have your goats look like they are walking on air!! I also want to give a big thank-you to Scottie Smith and Tyler Lloyd for coming and putting my scrapie tags in my babies for me since I have such a hard time inflicting pain! A big congratulations goes out to Scottie Smith for being accepted at Virginia Tech for the fall!!!!!!!
We support 4H and FFA as it instills important principles to our youth of today. We want to wish all the kids a great season in the show barn.....and remember the most important thing..........it's not wether you win or lose, but how ewe play the game!
